How to play White Elephant
- Everyone brings one wrapped gift within the agreed budget and puts it in the pile.
- Enter the players above and shuffle. The game picks a fair, random turn order, so there’s no need to draw numbers from a hat.
- Player one opens a gift. There’s nothing to steal yet.
- Every player after that chooses: open a new gift from the pile, or steal any opened gift that isn’t locked.
- If your gift is stolen, you move right away. Open a new gift or steal a different one, but no immediate steal-backs.
- Gifts lock after three steals (or your chosen limit) and stay with whoever holds them.
- Final swap: when the pile is empty, player one may swap their gift for any unlocked gift. Then the game ends.
The tracker above handles all of this for you. It shows whose move it is, greys out gifts that are locked or can’t be stolen back, and keeps a log, so nobody has to remember who stole what. Made a mistake? Hit Undo.
Popular White Elephant rule variations
Steal limits
Three steals per gift is the most common rule because it keeps the game moving. Use one or two steals for large groups or short parties, and “No limit” if you want chaos.
Steals per turn
Some groups cap the chain of steals in a single turn so one popular gift doesn’t hold up the game. Simply agree that after a set number of steals, the next robbed player must open a new gift.
No final swap
If you think player one already has enough advantage, untick “First player gets a final swap” and the game ends when the last gift is opened.
Dice White Elephant
Instead of choosing, players roll a die each turn. For example, 1 means steal, 2 means swap with a neighbour, 3 means open a gift. It’s a fun twist for families with kids.
Playing White Elephant online or with a remote team
Virtual White Elephant works well on any video call. The host shares their screen with this page and enters each move. Players either ship their gift to the person who wins it, or send a gift card or digital gift that’s revealed on camera. With remote teams, set a slightly lower budget to cover shipping, and keep the steal limit at two or three so the call doesn’t run long.
Good White Elephant gift ideas
- Useful and fun: a quality insulated tumbler, a mini projector, a card game everyone can play right away.
- Food and drink: hot sauce sampler, fancy hot chocolate kit, local coffee.
- Funny but wanted: a giant bag of gummy bears, a “desk emergency” kit, novelty socks with a real gift inside.
- Avoid: very personal items, re-gifted clutter and anything far over budget.
White Elephant vs Secret Santa
Both are gift exchanges, but they feel very different. White Elephant is a game: gifts are anonymous and the fun is in stealing. Secret Santa is personal: you’re secretly assigned one person and shop for them. Many groups do Secret Santa for close family and White Elephant for parties. If you need assigned names, use our free Secret Santa generator with private links you can send by text or WhatsApp.
Frequently asked questions
What is a White Elephant gift exchange?
A party game where everyone brings one wrapped gift. Players take turns in a random order, and on your turn you either open a new gift or steal one that’s already been opened. It’s also called Yankee Swap, Dirty Santa or Thieving Secretary.
How many times can a gift be stolen?
Most groups use three steals. On the third steal the gift is locked and stays with that person. You can change the limit from 1 to 5 before starting.
What happens when my gift is stolen?
You go again right away. You can open a new gift or steal a different one, but you can’t immediately steal back the gift that was just taken from you.
Does the first player get a second chance?
In the popular version, yes. Player one opened a gift without anything to steal, so at the end they may swap their gift for any unlocked gift. You can switch this rule off.
Can we play White Elephant online?
Yes. Share your screen on Zoom, Teams or Google Meet and run this game while everyone tells you their move. Each person should mail or show their gift so the group can see what’s being stolen.
How much should a White Elephant gift cost?
Typically $15 to $30. Funny, useful and surprisingly good gifts get stolen the most. Agree on a limit in advance so everything is roughly equal.
What’s the difference between White Elephant and Secret Santa?
In Secret Santa each person buys for one assigned person, kept secret. In White Elephant gifts are anonymous and everyone competes for them by stealing. For assigned gifts, use our Secret Santa generator.
