How to run Secret Santa in WhatsApp

      1. Copy the names from your WhatsApp group and tap “Paste a list” above, or type them in.
      2. Set a budget and date, and add exclusions if couples or siblings shouldn’t draw each other.
      3. Tap “Draw names”.
      4. Tap the green “WhatsApp” button next to each name. WhatsApp opens with a ready-made message containing that person’s private link. Pick their chat and send.
      5. Post a reminder in the group, like “Check your private message from me for your Secret Santa!”, so nobody misses it.

Why WhatsApp works so well for Secret Santa

For families spread across countries, and for friend groups that live in one busy group chat, WhatsApp is often the only place everyone reliably shows up. Running the draw there means no one has to hand over an email address or remember a password for yet another website.

The trick is keeping the matches secret inside a very public group chat. That’s why every person gets their own private link, sent in a one-to-one chat. The link opens a page that first checks it’s the right person, and only then shows the match, along with the budget, date and your note.

      WhatsApp Secret Santa etiquette

      • Private chats for links, the group for chatter. Use the group to agree on the budget and date, and to share hints or wish lists.
      • Pin the details. Pin a message in the group with the budget, deadline and exchange date, so latecomers can find it.
      • Wish lists help. Ask everyone to post two or three ideas in the group, or send them privately to the organizer.
      • Long-distance family? Agree whether gifts are shipped directly or opened together on a video call.
      • Prefer plain SMS? See Secret Santa by text. Every result also has text and email buttons.

Make it a WhatsApp video-call party

Once gifts have arrived, set a time for everyone to open them together on a WhatsApp group video call. Go around the circle: each person opens their gift and guesses who their Secret Santa was. If you turned on “One big circle” before drawing, the reveal passes neatly from one person to the next. Want more game? Play our online White Elephant game on the same call.

      Frequently asked questions

How do I do Secret Santa on WhatsApp?

Enter the names here and tap “Draw names”. Then tap “WhatsApp” next to each person. WhatsApp opens with their private link already typed. Choose that person’s chat and send it.

Can I post the links in our WhatsApp group?

Not if you want to keep it secret. Anyone in the group could open everyone’s links. Send each link in a private chat instead, and use the group only for announcements.

Do participants need to install anything?

No. The link opens in their phone’s browser. They don’t need an app or an account, just WhatsApp to receive the message.

Can the organizer take part too?

Yes. The results screen doesn’t show the matches, so send yourself your own link and open only that one.

Does it work with WhatsApp Web and desktop?

Yes. On a computer, the WhatsApp button opens WhatsApp Web or the desktop app with the message ready to send.

      Is it free?

Completely. There’s no limit on group size, and nothing is stored on our servers.
